A mini-split in El Paso County spends most of its life waiting. Homes in El Paso County, CO run cooling in a single month of the year, July. Compressors that sit idle for months can develop refrigerant migration, seized contactor points, and capacitor drift, faults that show up the moment the unit is called on and not a day before. When a contractor opens a failed unit in July, they are looking at what a long dormant period did to the components, not what the single month of cooling demand did. Lubricant that has settled, seals that have dried, capacitors that have weakened under no load all point back to the standoff between seasons.

Half the homes in El Paso County, Colorado were built in 1989 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split running in a house from that era sits on top of whatever electrical supply a previous owner had adapted, and what the contractor finds when the unit is open often sends them to the panel or the line set before they can close anything back up. Refrigerant circuits in older stock have usually been modified at least once. What the repair actually costs hinges on whether those prior changes were done to spec or just done.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house interior showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room it serves. It pulls room air across a coil and a blower, so when cooling or heating stops, runs weakly, or produces odd smells, that unit is where a contractor starts. The evaporator coil, the blower wheel, and the drain line inside it are all common sources of trouble.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. A refrigerant line set and a control wire run through the wall to connect the two units, and a fault anywhere along that path, or in the condenser itself, will affect how the whole system behaves.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific setup.
