A mini-split in San Miguel County runs almost exclusively in heating mode, which means the compressor, reversing valve, and cold-weather refrigerant circuit absorb wear that a system elsewhere might split between seasons. Homes in San Miguel County, CO have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. Coil icing, refrigerant charge loss, and compressor fatigue all show up under heating load, so a contractor called out for a repair checks those components in that context. A fault that develops quietly through winter often announces itself on the coldest day of the year, when the system is working hardest and the diagnosis is least convenient.

Half the homes in San Miguel County, Colorado were built in 1995 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split that has been running in a house of this vintage has likely outlasted its original parts program. When a contractor opens the unit, what they find is a compressor, a control board, or a refrigerant circuit that may take components no longer stocked by the manufacturer and sourced only through secondary supply. That is what shapes the repair scope here, and it is what a homeowner's quote will reflect.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a gray house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in separate rooms with furniture, connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall and is where most homeowners first notice something is wrong. A fan inside pulls room air across a coil; when that coil, that fan motor, or the condensate drain backing up behind it is the source of the problem, the contractor starts here.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and a second coil. A refrigerant line set and a control wire run between the two units through a small opening in the wall, and faults along that line set or inside the condenser are the other area a contractor works through.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly which components apply to your system and your house.
