Sizing a mini-split in San Juan County starts from a narrower question than it does in most places: the compressor will handle heating, and heating only. Homes in San Juan County, CO have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. A contractor calculating the load here works from cold-weather demand alone, which changes what output the unit needs and how the back-up heat threshold gets set. A system specced with cooling headroom to spare is a system that gave up heating capacity to a season that never arrives, and the first hard winter shows it.

Older service panels were built for what households ran at the time, and a mini-split system draws differently than what those panels were originally sized to carry. Half the homes in San Juan County, Colorado were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor looking at an installation here checks the panel before anything else, because an undersized service changes the scope and the price of the job. The ductwork question does not apply to a ductless system, but the electrical one does, and in stock of this age it is the first thing that has to be resolved.

The Mini-split Parts That Come With a New Installation

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is the piece a homeowner sees every day. Outside the house, the outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket and does the mechanical work of the system. A licensed contractor places each unit based on the layout and use of the space.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor handler. A dedicated electrical disconnect is mounted near the outdoor unit as well. These connections are what tie the indoor and outdoor sides into one working system.

The drawing here shows the typical layout of these pieces, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how they apply to your house.

Severe Weather Events in San Juan County

San Juan County's climate puts real pressure on heating and cooling equipment, and that pressure shapes what a mini-split installation here needs to handle. A system sized and installed for local conditions lasts longer and works harder when the weather demands it.
